Candidate for
Associate Professor of Acting
Narrative
Statement.
My tenure track position at UNT, begun in the fall of 2019, expects a level of excellence in three areas:
-
a pathway to satisfying research expectations through applied creative activity and practice at national and international levels
-
effective teaching
-
service

Creative Research
Launched by the receipt of the UNT Junior Faculty Summer Research Award, my creative research has been centered on exploring multiple professional, high-profile performance opportunities in the disciplines of stage, camera, and voice-over.
I have continuously been living what I teach from the outset of my tenure track, having appeared onstage as a member of the nationally recognized Actors’ Equity union in twelve professional, Priority I productions. Eight of these productions (with four leading roles) have been invited engagements in collaboration with the Tony Award-winning Dallas Theater Center, where I currently have the honor of being a member of the prestigious Brierley Resident Acting Company.
I partnered with a fellow professor on a production of Dear Donald, Dear Hillary: Their Secret Correspondence (financed by a second Summer Research Grant), which appeared in streaming form in multiple international theatre festivals in Canada, South Africa, Australia, and Europe (twice in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the largest event of its kind in the world),
Additional high-profile, award-winning creative research involved a collaboration with Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Doug Wright on his one-actor piece I Am My Own Wife. The production was also streamed nationally and, later, optioned for the Broadway on Demand network. Another project, the Southwest premier of Lucy Kirkwood’s Tony-nominated The Children, streamed nationally, as well.
The culmination of my accomplishments came in April of 2023, when I was nominated by Dallas Theater Center and selected for the Lunt Fontanne Fellowship by the Ten Chimneys Foundation. The award is presented annually to a select group of actors from the American theater, all operating at the top of their field, resulting in a week-long training intensive with four-time Tony Award-winner and member of the American Theater Hall of Fame Jerry Zaks at the Wisconsin estate of theatre icons Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne.
On-camera projects have included a recurring role in the nationally distributed Eyewitness Bible Series and a leading role in the original short film, Break, appearing in thirteen national and international film festivals, including the Austin Film Festival, where it secured a place on a short list for Oscar consideration.
Finally, with the representation of my nationally accredited talent agent, the Mary Collins Agency, I have amassed a sizable body of work in voice-over, most notably with appearances in two of the most internationally popular video games in the history of the medium, Dragonball Z and Borderlands III, and over one hundred commercial and political voice-overs for radio and television.
Teaching
My creative research is directly linked to my pedagogy, which involves a combination of training established methodologies, a personalized approach of mentorship, and dissemination of the practical lessons from my own career and creative research—all in the interest of preparing students for career readiness.

The fact that I actually live the career I am teaching allows me to remain current with technology, contemporary trends, and the business side of the profession. It also enhances my credibility with students, as they can see that I am indeed a “working actor” who takes what I do very seriously and has a passion for the craft.

The response of my students to my classes has been consistently very positive. According to the department’s Personnel Affairs Committee, I have been the highest rated professor in the department every semester since my hiring. Peer feedback has reflected the same enthusiasm, as referenced in my PAC narratives, peer reviews, and student mentorship statements.
Service
My service to the department has included:
-
advisor for the critical hinge course for Acting Majors (Acting: Realism I THEA 3050)
-
full reboot and administration of the UNT audition process
-
UNT Production Committee
-
three new faculty Search Committees
-
facilitation of professional headshots for Acting Majors
-
administration of the department’s curriculog process
-
coaching for the Showcase of Undergraduate Artists
Final Conclusions
Based on this self-assessment of all three areas of expectation, I believe I am a strong candidate for tenure who has brought a great deal of artistry, creativity, innovation, and comradery to my department. Going forward, I will continue to challenge myself as a professor in practice and bring those experiences to my pedagogy. This is what UNT expects of tenured professors, and it is my absolute intention to deliver that.
